I only got into Saturday Night Live recently. I had always loved individual clips, but just recently realized how amazing the show is as a whole. The pattern of the show, from the opening skit through Weekend Update and the closing thank-you from the host becomes familiar and welcome. Sometimes I will quote from Debbie Downer or Stefon only to realize that not one else gets the reference and I seem like a crazypants.
My watching the entire show also means I see skits that are hilarious but don’t get passed around as a viral video. As funny as Lonely Island digital shorts and great skits with the host (seriously, google “Emma Stone – Someone Like You SNL”) are, the recurring skits become like inside jokes and get better with each addition one. The Lawrence Welk Show, with the singing sisters and Kristen Wiig as the slightly off sister is amazing. Boston Teens with Rachel Dratch and Jimmy Fallon as Denise and Sully nails Bostonian mannerisms and stereotypes. However, my favorite recurring character may be Bill Hader’s Stefon. Sadly, this season was Bill Hader’s (and Stefon’s) last. Here’s to re-runs and hoping that Stefon eventually gets his own movie! Yesyesyesyesyes!
